Jack Cahn ran for SU President in order to change the school and stand up for student rights. He won the election by a vote of 447 to 329 - one of the largest margins in recent school history.
The Board of Elections disqaulified him using arbitrary and subjective means. Let’s talk facts. The following reasons were offered for disqualification:
1. Use of in-school resources for campaign materials.
Response: Jack left his posters in the SU office. When this was brought to his attention, he moved them.
2) Having more than the maximum of three posters on more than one bulletin board.
Response: Anyone can move a poster. This has been addressed in the past but ignored. Ms. Weinwurm promised him and Sweyn Venderbush that “no one will be disqualified over the posters.”
*NOTE: Kieran, Jack’s opponent, actually sent an email to the Board of Elections telling them that he believed strikes 1 and 2 were illegitimate.
3) Inappropriate conduct in attempting to recruit the support of Senior Caucus candidates through belittling the opposing mate.
Response: What did he say that was negative? All he did was ask for their endorsement. And does it not count that Eddie’s campaign called Jack “power-hungry” and ran the most negative campaign in the past 3 years? Notice that many of Eddie’s campaign managers have now deleted their negative statuses from election night. I wonder why.
The larger issue is not these minor violations. It’s the fact that time and time again the Board of Elections has gone out of its way to skew elections - to pervert democracy to prevent the will of the students from being heard. This is the second time this has happened in two years. But worst of all - according to Board of Election member Winston Du - it was decided by the Chairmen of the elections alone - without a vote of the entire Board. Talk about two people sitting in a room and changing the results of an election!
UPDATE: Winton Du has been fired for acting as a whistle-blower and revealing that fact that he and other Board of Elections members were not consulted to approvate the disqualification.
Please overturn the Board of Elections' disqualification of Cahn and Moon and restore democracy to Stuyvesant.
