Zoe Whittington started this petition to Students

Mrs Leonard a teacher in Purcell is being fired for asking for students pronouns and reading a book that mentions sexual acts. This book references fowl language, death, and sexual context. This book is deemed appropriate for ninth graders but somehow is the reason for her being fired. We’ve read “To Kill a Mockingbird”,“The Outsiders” and “Romeo and Juliet”. These book all mention the following sex, drugs, alcohol, suicidal thoughts, and suicide itself. There have also been male teachers in this past year that have made references (or jokes) about suicide, and nothing was done. I believe that this is a problem and if you don’t believe that you are a part of said problem.

This teacher “Mrs Leonard” has done so much in this past year to try and help students feel better in the environment of school. Her and I were talking about starting a mental health group where kids could feel safe and helped. I was in the process of writing essays for these grants but no longer feel like it would be allowed at this school. Mrs Leonard helped kids with their own sexuality, depression, anxiety, and even  Eating Disorders.

I will just say this woman has made a mark on so many students lives and she doesn’t deserve to be treated like this. She was teaching what no other teacher would. She was teaching us what we need to know. This teacher speaks up for the rights of our students and makes sure we are all treated equal. So I enlist the help of all the students at Purcell high school to sign this petition in the hopes of keeping Mrs Leonard as an English teachers at this school.
