South African Union of Jewish Students (SAUJS) started this petition to Students and

Over the last few years we have witnessed a number of hate-filled acts of Anti-Antisemitism on the campus of the University of the Witwatersrand such as Nazi salutes, Anti-Semitic graffiti on campus and the singing of “Shoot the Jew”. As a result, campus is sometimes a very uncomfortable place for Jewish students. The University has a responsibility and moral obligation to condemn and combat hate speech in all forms to ensure that campus is a safe environment for all students.

We, the undersigned, urge the University of the Witwatersrand to urgently adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of Anti-Antisemitism which states:

“Antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of Anti-Antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.”

Jews have been subject to verbal and physical abuse on the campuses of the university of the Witwatersrand. This is unacceptable for any institution or society that claims to protect basic human rights. We believe that the adoption of this resolution will enable the perpetrators of this heinous abuse to be held accountable.
