There have been calls to cancel this years GCSE and A level exams, and media coverage has been typically one-sided, with little to be heard from those supporting exams going ahead.

There are many many reasons why exams should not cancelled.

1) One of the most common arguments for the cancellation of exams is the disruption faced to learning during lockdown means that students aren't going to be as prepared for exams. But the big flaw in this is the fact that assessing us during the next few months will be even worse. Instead of having the next few months to have time to improve, there will be the constant pressure of having to perform our best in every single assessment and lesson, never being able to have time to learn from our mistakes.

2) There will be such a lack of consistency and chances of cheating. If we look at the Welsh system, nationally set assessments can be taken within a wide time frame, and teachers can choose to do them in a classroom, working together, or spread over multiple lessons etc? What are the chances of all the answers being leaked? If you have a more lenient teacher, would they help and prepare you more than others? In these conditions, some people are guaranteed to have an advantage just based on the conditions they sit the assessments in.

3) Our predicted grades were majorly based on the first few months of year 12, where most students were still adjusting to A-levels. Unlike last year's cohort, we're missing nearly 6 months of academic data. Data from this academic year was based on lockdown content before we could improve on those topics, so they are not an accurate representation of what we can achieve by the time exam season comes round. As well as this, the difficulty and reliability of class tests vary immensely across schools. Therefore, centre assessed would not be fair and accurate.

4) Loads of students have been working incredibly hard to improve and achieve the grades they dream of. If exams are cancelled, our grades would feel as if they have been taken out of our control. This is a chance to grab hold of our own education and dedication to learning, and aspire to see our hard work pay off. Yes, the pandemic is stressful, exams are stressful, but doing exams is currently the best option, and will be a lot easier and lenient that other year groups.

There are many other reasons, but these summarise the main ones. Sign this petition to show your support for exams to go ahead. Thank you :)
