Teens and students should not have to do homework for 3 main reasons...

1. More downtime!- Teens already spend 7 hours a day at school, leaving 17 hours left in the day. When you subtract the minimum time a teen needs to sleep according to kidshealth.org from that number, the average time eating, doing household activities, extracurricular activities, and working (according to www.bls.gov), this only leaves 1 hour and 16 minutes, and that does not include getting ready for school, driving, family time, showering, and many other things. According to https://ldaamerica.org the average middle school and high school student spends anywhere from 75 and 150 minutes per set of homework, so that leaves the average teen with coincidentally a maximum of 1 minute of free time. www.ascd.org recommends setting aside 10 hours for sleep and downtime, in other words, not including sleep teens need 2 hours to themselves, and as you saw in the evidence above, the average teen does not get this at all. 

2. Anxiety- According to www.cdc.gov 7.1% of children aged 3-17 years (approximately 4.4 million) have diagnosed anxiety, and this only includes the children who are diagnosed, and most people can not afford the Psychiatric care to get their children's mental health issues examined. Anxiety rates are definitely going up, in 2018 the anxiety rates in the United States went up 5%. This just goes to show teens do not need more on their plates, and homework definitely isn't helping.

3. Bad home lives- Sometimes students come home, and they don't understand something. Some people could ask a parent or guardian, but others don't have that privilege. Based on this article by www.educationnext.org, by the age of 24, those who lived in single-parent families growing up have received fewer years of schooling and are less likely to receive a bachelor’s degree than those from two-parent families. This, among other examples, is another reason why homework is not very beneficial.
