High School students are over assigned homework all across the country. According to Brookings.edu, an average high school student has 3.5 hours of homework a day. For students that participate in honors and AP classes, that number can even double. In a study conducted by the Princeton Review, 50 percent of high school students reported having severe stress. Out of that 50 percent, 25 percent say it originated from homework. All this stress leads to poor studying tactics as well, which was proven by the Princeton Review who says that high school students spend 1/3 of their study time being stressed and anxious.

An average high school assigns each student 6-7 classes every day. If each teacher assigns 1 hour of homework for each student, that takes up well over 6 hours of after school time. This contributes to the loss of personal time for a student, in which a student could benefit from doing what they love. Most high schools in California dismiss students after 2 PM. If a student is doing homework until 9 PM every night, they do not get any time to spend with their family and loved ones. Lastly, excessive homework takes away from the ability for a student to exercise and maintain their healthy lifestyles.

Our message needs to be spread to the California Department of Education, United States Department of Education, and local school districts. High school students are missing out on valuable time to explore things they love to do, which could lead to a stress-free future and happy career. Students are also unable to maintain their physical health, as there is simply not enough time to worry about homework and exercise. Finally, students are also missing out on irreplaceable family time which can not be priced. The only way to make a difference, is to be a part of it. Therefore, I ask you to spread this petition and help improve the lives of teenagers all over the country.
