As one of the up and coming music schools in the country, the College of Music at the University of Colorado Boulder has a growing population of talented musicians. With the high standards that this college is setting for their students, this requires endless amounts of work, which means lots of time in the practice rooms.

However, there a quite a few issues with the practice rooms in the College of Music. Currently, there are five hallways of practice rooms: one with 5 rooms and no pianos, one dedicated to piano majors with 8 rooms and grand pianos, and three with 10 rooms on each hallway - some with pianos and some without. There are only 43 total practice rooms for the 400+ students in the College of Music. While there are more being built with the new building addition, there most likely will still not be enough. As a vocalist, the practice room situation can often be frustrating. It is very difficult to find a practice room in the first place, as they are taken for many hours of the day. The instrumental students are often taking the rooms with pianos when they don't need them as much as voice majors, in addition to the fact that they can practice for hours on end since their instrument not directly related to their body like the voice is. This means that there is often a lack of student turn-around in the practice rooms. When there are practice rooms actually available, it is hard to practice when there is not a piano in the room, especially if you are learning new repertoire. Often, the pianos are either out of tune or in need of repairs. In some cases, the practice rooms can be harmful to vocalists because they are not built in a way that is specific to the resonance of the voice, which can often cause over-singing.

The voice students of CU Boulder's College of Music would like to achieve a more balanced arrangement of practice rooms. Ideally, this would mean dedicating one hallway specifically to voice or instrumental students. This would voice voice students to have a hallway where they know the space will be safe for their vocal health in addition to having a reliable piano. This way, when a musician needs a working piano, they know which hallways to use, and when they don't need a piano, other musicians can still continue their practice time. Overall, this would be beneficial for every student in the College of Music: both undergraduate and graduate students of every discipline.

We thank you in advance for your support! Thank you for reading our petition.
