Why this petition matters

With the alarming rise of Covid cases across the country (especially in our region), and the spread of the new Omicron variant, an in-person class agenda for the Winter 2022 semester poses risk of heightened exposure in the Eastern community. Most students have already had their schedules cut down to one or two in-person classes, with the rest being remote or asynchronous. It is redundant for students to pay for on-campus housing to attend one or two classes a week in person. While commuting to campus may be feasible for some, out-of-state students (and students located further away) are forced with paying room & board to attend one or two classes out the week in an actual classroom setting. In the past week and half, Eastern has pushed back the start date of in-person classes twice, and by two weeks. Converting to a fully online semester is more logical than continuing to delay in-person classes, which is a waste of time, and money. In-person events have also come to a halt for the time being. Although remote learning isn't necessarily "fun", it is the safest option to protect our community. Eastern prides itself on putting the safety and health of students first, so why not make this shift for the sake of everyone's health?
