Climate change has become the biggest crisis that our planet has had to face. Global plastic production has risen to over 8.3 billion tons, and continues to rise. 40% of this plastic is discarded after one use. While this may seem as simple as throwing it in the trash, it is much more complicated than that. This plastic that you throw in the trash is ending up in landfills, awaiting to be burned into fossils fuels that will release harmful CO2 emissions into our air. These emissions are shown to have disastrous effects on human and animal health. If the plastic does not end up in a landfill, it will end up in our oceans. More than 8 million tons of plastic waste ends up in the oceans each year. This has drastic effects on marine plants and animals. Plastic can cause starvation, suffocation, and drowning in sea life. It can also introduce pathogens into the water, killing coral and plants. Although some might think this cannot affect humans, 70% of breathable oxygen originates from marine plants, and this plastic may also end up in the seafood we eat.

You may not think you have an impact on this world, but every plastic cup you may use throughout the day, ends up in our nation’s landfills, or the oceans. There are 365 days in a year, and all of this plastic adds up. By replacing your plastic cups with a reusable one, you have the potential to make a huge difference. Us students, create the hope that one day, we will overcome the crisis of climate change. This is your promise to use reusable cups as a start to saving our beautiful planet.
