Growing up, girls are always told to dress modestly always. We are required to stop wearing “revealing” clothes, dresses, skirts and shorts with the “correct” length, usually below the knee. Women are told to avoid showing “too much skin” and “dressing like sluts” as a precaution among sexual assault.
Slut shaming is the practice of criticizing women and girls who are perceived to violate expectations of behavior and appearance regarding issues related to sexuality. Examples are violating dress code policies by dressing in perceived sexually provocative ways, requesting access to birth control, having premarital, casual, or promiscuous sex, engaging in prostitution, or when being victim blamed for being raped or otherwise sexually assaulted.
This problem is evident everywhere, on the streets, in our classrooms and even in social media. This is also experienced by the opposite gender, but we will only focus on women, as they are the main target/subject to this oppression. Yes, we should be aware that our bodies should be respected but we should also respect other people.
By signing on this petition, you can help raise awareness on the increasing problem of slut-shaming and to remove this stigma among women that is constantly happening in our society.
