Justice for Chairperson Tempii Champion

The students of the Communication Sciences Disorders (CSD) program of Long Island University are outraged by the grave injustice that has been committed with the rash and unceremonious removal of Dr. Tempii Champion. On March 15, 2017, Dr. Tempii Champion was terminated from her position as Chairperson of the CSD program at LIU.
During her tenure, as a chairperson, Dr. Champion wholeheartedly and selflessly devoted herself to both developing and producing clinicians of the highest caliber to represent the quality of education at Long Island University. These clinicians will substantially contribute to the lives of the diverse population and institutions we will eventually serve.
Dr. Champion’s interest in the field of language development and language disorders among multicultural populations is evident in the compassion and dedication she instills in her students. Her compassion is evident not only in the classroom or online, but also in the energy and drive she imparts through her understanding of all cultures here in the United States and abroad. Despite Dr. Champion’s numerous accomplishments and qualifications, she has maintained the human touch that makes her students feel as though they know her personally.
In Dr. Champion’s multicultural class students are given the opportunity to not only reflect upon their culture, but to build awareness of the numerous cultures and diversity to foster understanding. As problem solvers, we are given opportunities to share our opinions, understand the point of view of others, and reflect upon our own thinking. A Scientific American article (“How Diversity Makes Us Smarter,” 1/30/2017) stated, “The first thing to acknowledge about diversity is that it can be difficult. In the U.S., where the dialogue of inclusion is relatively advanced, even the mention of the word “diversity” can lead to anxiety and conflict.” Dr. Champion's class served as the platform to have such a dialogue and build understanding to embrace diversity in our practice.
