Save the Podocarpus tree

Eleanor Vanden Busch started this petition to Students of Camino Hall

Beside Camino Hall on the west side of the building is a 65-year-old podocarpus tree. USD administration may cut down this tree, with 20 to 30 years left in its life, due to construction of a new building on the site of Copley field. They wish to replace it with four new trees, which will require much more water and resources to grow and will not provide as much oxygen as the older, well-established tree.

We are students. We spend up to 14 hours a day in Camino Hall working on projects. We LIVE here, and we urge USD not to loose sight of the value of greenery and community as part of a holistic lifestyle.

Green spaces and shade are often undervalued as community building spaces. This tree, one of the oldest and largest on campus, has shaded and supported communities of students and faculty for generations. The classrooms, hallways, and offices of Camino look out onto this tree. A large picnic table on the patio located beneath the tree hosts potlucks, Basement Society club meetings, and Traffic club meetings. This space is a naturally occurring community space and a relaxed place to work on homework.

New building projects should work in harmony with our existing landscape, and should not require destroying it. Help us vouch to conserve this current, well-established tree rather than seeing it replaced with yet another artificial landscaping project on USD's campus.
