Obtain Accessible Pedestrian Signals at Montclair State University
Audio Description also known as AD, is a narration typically aimed to assist the blind or visually impaired. In videos AD is a narration of what occurs visually, however there are AD’s that are essential in people’s everyday lives. This form of AD is called “Accessible Pedestrian Signals” the New York City DOT describes this “(APS) are devices affixed to pedestrian signal poles to assist blind or low vision pedestrians in crossing the street. APSs are wired to a pedestrian signal and send audible and vibrotactile indications when pedestrians push a button installed at the crosswalk.” This form of AD is common among cities and many colleges.
According the the Disability resource center at Montclair State University “Montclair State University is committed to the full inclusion of students with disabilities in all curricular and co-curricular activities as mandated by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.” However, Montclair State University is not equipped with this assistive technology. Not only does the university have attending students who are blind and visually impaired but the university is also open to the public. Having APS on campus will help Montclair State University uphold its rights and responsibilities.
With enough signatures and support from the community of Montclair State University including students, professor, faculty, etc this petition will be presented to Dr. Susan Cole.
