Why this petition matters

Students on the SCU campus need school-year-round study spaces that are open much later than the current locations (the library (very inconsistent hours; closes at 10 pm at the latest some days), the Bell Center (closes at 12 am), and the LLC basement [CAPS] (closes at 10 pm)). These spaces must be considered “quiet zones” where noise not related to academics is strictly prohibited, unlike other locations on campus that are typically loud and distracting (the LLC basement [CAPS], dorm lobbies, dorm rooms, the study area in the Bell Center, and even the library). The desired hours for the new space is 24/7, but a compromise of being open from 6 am until 2 am would be well received. Areas for group studying should also be available and an overall attitude of respect for the focus needs of others should be actively fostered. This area needs to be study conducive with an uplifting atmosphere (natural light options, focus-directed wall colors, calming pictures on the walls, etc) and have a good WiFi connection for research and submission purposes. It should contain comfortable furniture including but not limited to desks with chairs, armchairs, couches, and tables with chairs. This space can be monitored through work-studies and campus security. The addition of this study room will encourage a more academic atmosphere on campus as well as academic accountability among students and professors/students.
