Orting school district requires all students to stand for the pledge every morning before class. Students should have the right to choose to stand or not. The issues with this outdated, cult like pledge are the phrases: “One nation under god” and “liberty and justice for all”. Firstly, under the first amendment there is freedom of religion. Standing for the pledge is a violation of that right. Freedom of religion is the freedom to practice any religion that you may choose, but freedom of religion also means the choice of not believing in any religion. Secondly the term “liberty and justice for all” is just untrue. The cases of Breonna Taylor and Elijah McLain have sent shockwaves across the US. Both of these people were killed for no exact reason, posing no threat to the police detaining them. Thing about both this people is that they have received ZERO. justice for their murders. Why? Simply because they were murdered by police. So the phrase “liberty and justice for all” is just untrue. Therefore, the pledge should not be required in OSD classrooms.
