Chloe Wirtz started this petition to Students and

The University of Lincoln has made the decision to have some students leave the university’s campus at 8pm. We feel as though this is too late and is unsafe for the students attending. Therefore we are petitioning to have the ending time of lessons/ seminars returned to 6pm.

Lincoln has one of the highest crime rates in the country. In 2019/20, there were 150 crimes recorded for every 1,000 people living in Lincoln - that compares to 89 per 1,000 across England and Wales as a whole. The area has a Crime Severity Score of 24.9 - nearly two times higher than the score of 13.8 for England and Wales.

In 2018 there were 1,374 Sexual offences – which is up 16% from the previous year. We feel this wouldn’t be very safe for any student to be walking, biking or even driving home. Added with being tired after learning they are at greater risk of accidents or assault. Also as the campus is so open anyone can come onto the area, while we don’t usually mind, late at night alone, it is not ideal for anyone, student or teachers. The University of Lincoln owe us, their students a duty of care and at the moment it feels like they are not helping us to be safe.

While we appreciate that current times are challenging, we however also feel that the students should not take the impact of the possible consequences of this decision. Some students do not have the safety net of walking home with friends/ roommates, or some may have longer to travel back home let alone the travel implications for those commuting or those who have jobs or children. It is possible to also miss buses or trains and therefore cannot get home after a long day.

Furthermore, if the crime rate is not enough reason for the finishing time to be shorter. A students free time and mental health should also be a factor.

If a student finishes at 8pm they might not get back to their home till 8:30pm and so won’t eat till 9pm. Then there’s their reading and assignments they receive, doing this later than they already are, is going to be harder, including with how taxing some of the work can be. Others may also work during the weekend then they will not have the time to do the work they receive and may also not have a social life. A combinational of both returning late and having little to no social life and getting to bed later, will have a impact on a students wellbeing and mental health.

I am a law student and many of my friends also have very demanding courses they are studying for, some also commute, go home alone or have work after school. I am one of the lucky few who have a support  network where friends can walk home with me but some may not be so lucky. Especially first years who have not made the friends they need to be safe. My course is very taxing and sometimes I don’t get to bed early anyway without adding getting home late. As is the same for many of my peers.

Thank you for reading and I hope you will join us in our effort to protect the students.
