My son is in the business school and said he was one of the best professors he has ever had at Mizzou.

His comment was not derogatory; no one should lose their job over something as harmless as this.

The teacher made a joke, the student was offended and complained, so the teacher apologized. That should be the end of the matter in a sane society. Taking away a person's livelihood over a poorly-judged joke is an extreme and cruel overreaction. Let's cancel 'cancel culture' and behave like civilized adults again.

Tolerance and understanding needs to come from all sides. We also need to have compassion and a sense of humor to survive. Limiting a professor to teach like a robot is a mistake. It is important to teach not only the subject matter, but life skills, and a lesson with humor is the difference between students wanting to be in a classroom, or just learning from a book.

I was graduated with a BJ from the University of Missouri in the early 70's. For decades, I gave thousands of dollars annually to the University and the J-School, proud of the degree and the Walter Williams School of Journalism. No more will I support this public institution which has been hijacked by Marxist professors, a feckless administration, a legislature scared of losing a campaign dollar. I'm done with contributions, but I'm not done soliciting my friends and alums to stop the madness at Mizzou. The Marxists believe in cancel culture. I believe in voting with my dollars and my prodigious powers of persuasion, not force. Leftists were always present in the classrooms and in the academic halls, but the one thing they and the U supported was Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Association. When I disagreed with a professor or administrator, each listened to the other and invited other opinions. Not now. The U and the AD and the venerable School of Journalism will have to find another source of funding to replace my annual thousands. Change, recover your values and the points on the compass to the higher calling of intellectual discourse and the constant search for facts, not opinions or the falsehoods spread by the mob or manipulators within media. Separate fact from opinion, follow the teachings and moto of Walter Williams carved in stone above the entrance to the oldest and previously the best School of Journalism in the country. Continue caving in to the Marxist ideology and it will eat you as a snack. Goodbye, Fair Missouri. You must reap what you sow; you have learned group think and failed to wage fight for the truth; now sleep in and with it. Michael Conger, Class of '71
