Why this petition matters

Started by Liz Rivero

Books in our school are being banned for containing main characters who are apart of the LGBTQ+ (specifically characters who are transgender), people of color, drugs, sex, and anything that seems "unfit" or "inappropriate" for students overall in Collier County. In a school in Collier County, a teacher was pressured to remove all of their books because of censorship. Having this censorship is a disruption of our first amendment rights to freedom of speech. The most hurtful part of this unjust action is that our school is full of students of all different races and sexualities' who are being deeply affected and pained by this action of racism and homophobia. This isn't something that is only happening in Collier County, either. Schools all over the state of Florida are banning books left and right, mostly for containing characters who are transgender. If schools can't handle books with characters of the LGBTQ+ community or characters of color then how can we trust schools to treat these same students with respect?
