After 2 years of partial divestment, the time has come to demand full divestment from fossil fuels at UNC Asheville. The University claims to hold values of diversity/inclusion, innovation, and sustainability. Investing in Fossil Fuels by allowing our endowment to be managed by a problematic company like UNC Management Company negates those stated values. Climate change is a risk to everyone, and especially our most vulnerable populations. Following the signing of the Carbon Commitment that pledges UNCA be carbon neutral by 2050, divestment is an obvious next step. Divestment is not only an environmental issue, but also a social and racial justice issue. It is time to hold the university accountable for its actions by demanding full divestment.
