KIPP Sunnyside Students for Social Justice: Demand an End to Gun Violence.

Enough is enough. We, as a society, need to put an end to gun violence. We cannot allow the senseless killing of innocent students and teachers to continue. Our schools are expected to be a safe place not a shooting target. No child should be afraid to go to school with the mindset that it could be their last day. We do not want to become another statistic. There have been 208 school shootings since the Columbine Shooting in 1999; we do not want to become the 209th.
However, schools are not the only ones being affected. Gun violence is an issue across the country. In the United States there are about 13,000 gun homicides per year, including suicides, mass shooting and murders. Compared to other countries, Americans are ten times more likely to die from guns. None of us should be affected by gun violence.
SSJ (Students for Social Justice) stands for the fulfillment of social justice here and abroad. We may be teenagers but our stance should not be overlooked. We, as a nation and individuals, want to cease judging our civility by our strengths. We must be judged by how we care for our most vulnerable individuals. We, as citizens of the world, demand progress for issues such as gender equality, educational equity, social justice and the realization for natural rights for all people no matter their origin or culture.
Our mission is to expand awareness and increase action on social issues but today we protest for stricter gun control. We are activists that want to tackle all the social inequalities in our world, starting with this one.
We, Students for Social Justice, in solidarity with March for Our Lives, demand the following changes:
1. Universal, comprehensive background checks
2. Bringing the ATF into the 21st century with a digitized, searchable database
3. Funds for the Center for Disease Control to research the gun violence epidemic in America
4. High-capacity magazine ban
5. Assault weapons ban
6. Raise age limit to purchase all firearms to 21 in the United States
We will join together to walkout on April 20th to demand these changes but our struggle will not end here. SSJ will continue to act to ensure that all people are safe and are able to attain the natural rights that every person on this earth should have. Our actions will begin here in Sunnyside, Houston, Texas but will work in solidarity with national movements to create social, political and economic change for the better of all of us. Our action begins, but will not stop here.
