So I think not allowing us to walk for graduation when we could do it outside with plenty of space is absolutely deplorable given the Covid-19 guidelines here in Vermont. Us students have worked hard and deserve far better than a computer screen to celebrate a major mile stone! I have already wrote the VT governor as well as a the NU administration asking them to reconsider and find a better solution than a slide show for the class of 2020. Please see my letter that I have copied here

Hello all,

I am writing to you in hopes you and the new president will reconsider the plan for graduation. My name is Chelsea Faure and I am a former student who graduated in December 2019 I have been waiting since then to walk for graduation. I find it pretty deplorable that NU is able to make a plan for future students to be back on campus but can’t make a plan to spread students chairs out 6ft apart for graduation. Many schools are able to do this successfully so why we can’t is beyond me.
The current Vermont guidelines allow people to come from out of state as long as they quarantine for 14 days. Putting us on the computer doesn’t cut it. Many students have waited YEARS for this. Some of us are the first in our families to even make it through college. And some of us like myself have had to overcome many obstacles such a as working to support ourselves through school and battling learning and physical disabilities.

While I understand Covid-19 is a real thing we deserve better than this. I sincerely hope you guys will reconsider because I’m confident if we all put our heads together we can figure out a solution. Maybe we could limit the guest a student is allowed to invite or maybe we could just have the students and the professors even just that and having someone allow us to walk by and saying congratulations would mean the world to myself and many others.

As a Vermont resident myself I am willing to reach out to the governor or who ever to help out and get some ideas. Please please please share this with the president and reconsider. The Norwich model states I will TRY. So I am asking you to try your best to be creative and work with me to find a solution.

Thank you,
Chelsea Faure
