To everyone who loves the Cooper Union,

There have been a series of occupations of the Foundation Building by a group of students opposing the decision to reduce the scholarship policy for the first time in our school's history.

Over the last several years, a solution to the school's economic crisis has been discussed extensively by every member of the Cooper community; students, faculty, staff, the administration, and residents of the neighborhood, have all been involved in an attempt to maintain Cooper's eminent position in the life of the city and to find a solution on to its overwhelming financial problem.

Our President, Jamshed Bharucha, from the beginning, insisted that ending Cooper's history as a free institution would be the last option chosen and would only occur if every other alternative was exhausted. Despite everyone's attempt to create such an alternative, we have not succeeded in finding a viable alternative.

President Bharucha is a remarkable figure whose patience, resilience and willingness to listen to alternative ideas has impressed everyone who's worked with him. He has presented us with clarity and transparency in his communications throughout this economic crisis, and we owe him our appreciation and assistance in sustaining our beloved institution.

The occupation of the school has created a poisonous and dangerous atmosphere that can potentially destroy the school forever. It is time for the Cooper community, students, alumni, faculty, staff and all interested parties to indicate their unqualified support of the President and his proposed course of action.

There are times when occupation and resistance are essential, and effective. But in this case they can only diminish the school and hasten it towards its extinction.

Please join us by indicating your support of our President.

Sincerely,

Milton Glaser, A ’51, Trustee Emeritus
