Big Food companies such as Aramark, Sodexo, and Compass Groups have an extensive track record of abusing farmers’ and workers’ rights, contributing to environmental degradation, and disregarding complaints concerning the safety of consuming these products.

Like many Big Food industries, Aramark also heavily contributes to the Prison-Industrial Complex. The company is in partnership with the private prison system, CoreCivic, which profits from mass incarceration by exploiting the labor of prisoners; and due to the systemically racist nature of the American criminal justice system, this disproportionately affects Black populations.

Injustice in food industries runs deep, and as such, goes hand-in-hand with racial injustice. As Monarchs, we believe that the continued support of Aramark is an act of support for a racist and unethical system, which we believe does not reflect the core values upheld by our institution.

As we continue the fight to dismantle institutional racism, it is our goal that Old Dominion University maintains its commitment to creating a diverse and inclusive campus community by actively refusing to perpetuate racial violence.

This petition was created as a request to end contracts with Aramark and to look into more ethical, and perhaps locally-sourced, food suppliers. Severing ties with Big Food corporations is a major step towards nurturing positive change at an institutional level.
