Why this petition matters

Started by class of 2021

With covid-19 expanding to a pandemic and reaching new levels of infection, UISD closed all schools for the remainder of the semester. Instead of us students receiving our typical numerical grades and averages the UISD board of trustees has chosen to adopt a pass/fail system of grading. In this said system, the grade you received first 9-weeks of second semester will be the grade u receive second nine weeks. On your report card if you passed the class first semester you will receive a “P” marking and if you failed you will receive an “F” marking. This means you will no longer be able to change the grade you have received and that grade from first 9 weeks will be on your transcript when you send to colleges/universities. With an influx in colleges/universities not requiring standardized testing for the incoming applicants it is more crucial now than ever to rely on our grades more than ever. Second 9 weeks is usually the time where grades improve the most and we have been robbed of that with this system. We have worked tirelessly this year. When UISD told us school was canceled we said ok. When UISD told us we will start attending online classes we said ok. But when they tell us all of our hard work we have done these past few months were worthless, we say NO. So we ask the class of 2021 from all UISD schools to sign this petition and let us choose what system we want on a student by student basis: either the pass/fail system or the original system.
