Mental health is a very important topic that does not get discussed enough and is often misunderstood. 1 in 5 children and teens suffer from mental illnesses and more than 1 in 3 also have anxiety (according to www.cdc.gov In fact, brain changes in adolescence actually make teens more vulnerable to mental issues. Schools cause anxiety and stress, which makes students even more susceptible to mental health issues.

As students, former students, parents, teachers, and members of the community, we demand schools to start prioritizing our and our kids' mental health.

We believe that schools should implement Safe Spaces, where students can relax and calm down whenever they feel overwhelmed. This room will have fun and relaxing activities, posters with encouraging phrases, meditation guides, hotlines, and fun games. It will promote social-emotional learning and guide students on ways to overcome their mental issues.

The simple truth is that half of all mental health conditions start by age 14 but most go undetected and untreated; furthermore, adolescent mental health conditions can extend on to adulthood (according to the World Health Organization).

By implementing Safe Spaces, we can start addressing mental health issues at their core in schools and begin destigmatizing this significant issue.

It’s time to stand up and hold our systems accountable. In a time when society is immersed in stigma, you can be the hero to step up and pave the way for the next generation. The future of our kids' mental wellness is counting on what we do at this moment.
