Rape in not by any means an easy topic to discuss. Although talking about rape is uncomfortable to talk about, talking about it in a safe place like school helps students become familiar with rape culture and provides students the opportunity to recognize their own beliefs and values on the topic. Not only that but it also can help survivors speak up and get mental health services.
During OHS lunch periods I have conducted a poll asking only two questions. (1) Do you believe teachers are understanding and sensitive when it comes to the topic about rape? The overwhelming majority of the student body say yes, teachers a extremely sensitive to the topic and don’t force students to read/talk if you are uncomfortable. (2) Do you believe we should continue talking about rape in classes? Once again the majority say it should stay an open and safe discussion to talk about even though it’s uncomfortable.
“We need to talk about this topic. As a victim myself, I would have never told anyone if it wasn’t for the schools help, and open conversation about it. I don’t believe we should get permission slips signed because we are on our way to adulthood and this is one way schools help us become better adults in the long run. Our parents should be aware about the topic of discussion and we should make our own decisions on whether or not we want to be a part of the discussion.” -Anonymous Student
