Climate change is one of the most pressing issues our country faces - especially as one of the biggest worldwide contributors. As it is not currently a required part of curriculum, many students and members of society are under educated on this topic, and as a result, we are not mobilizing policy efficiently enough.

Our generation has shown great willingness and ability to create change. As the future leaders of our country, it is imperative that OSU students are equipped with necessary information that will help influence policy change, business practices and everyday choices. Students should all have the opportunity to be informed on climate change and its implications for our future. Oregon State University students should be required to take a course of introductory climate change/climate science as a part of the Baccalaureate Core curriculum.

Adding climate change to OSU’s required curriculum would present this information to students in a science-based way and give them the opportunity to view evidence, draw conclusions, and use this information when entering the workforce and fully participating in our communities. Climate change courses also encourage students to think of the world on a larger scale than their personal lives, and consider how actions and policies affect others.

According to Oregon State University’s mission statement, the vision of OSU is to "share and apply knowledge for the betterment of humankind". The three signature focus areas within the statement are “the science of sustainable earth ecosystems, health and wellness, and economic prosperity and social progress”. Including a climate change course in the Bacc Core curriculum would align with OSU’s mission entirely, and help Oregon State students represent all that Oregon State stands for.
