Students are Stranded Without Housing. Please Help!
Why this petition matters
I am a student, living on the other side of the country all on my own for the first time. I am braving the difficulties of a difficult professional school amidst the lingering effects of serious health issues, family crises back home, missing my wife of 1 year like crazy, and financial hardships. Most prominently, however, I have nowhere to live. I had found housing, Vogue Residences at 155 King St N, which I was supposed to move into several weeks ago. However, construction delays have forced the other occupants and I to find our own temporary accommodations for an unspecified amount of time. Since my scheduled move-in date in September, which was cancelled at the last minute, I have already lost more money than I made the entire summer from moving between temporary accommodations and cancelling flights of family members coming to help me move in light of my health. One of my temporary accommodations forced me to miss weeks of school because of a sickness that a doctor deemed was caused by excessive mold exposure at this location. I was told daily for weeks by the former property management company, Stoneleigh Managenent, that I may even move in the following day and that everything was approved for occupancy except for something small, but was just told by the City of Waterloo that this in fact was never true and the building is quite far off from being inhabited.
My story is not unique. HUNDREDS of students have also been left scrambling and unable to focus on studies without a stable place to live from this building alone. There are other students in other buildings in the same position every year. This does not give students a chance to be successful.
The new property management company, Fengate Asset Management, has neglected to offer us student inhabitants any form of assistance. We are simply told to wait. Will it be days? Weeks? Months? A year? We don't know. When we do finally move in, many will pay prices expected for nice apartments in downtown Toronto, a far cry from what we are getting.
We are asking you for help. In signing this petition, you are helping our voice to be louder in demanding Fengate Asset Management to give us the option to get out of our leases with a full deposit refund and without repercussions because they have broken their side of the lease agreement by not honoring the signed-upon move-in date. We are also demanding the financial reimbursement for costs incurred as a result of leaving us stranded.
Thank you for supporting the next generation of leaders, experts, and difference-makers!
