Wai Sum Fong started this petition to Students and teachers

I remember I was in the middle of math class doing an assigned worksheet and I scrolled down to see many pages I had to do. I wanted to get a good idea of how long and how much work I would need to complete. I see it is only one page and I then take a look at all the questions. It only takes up half a page. Awesome, I then take a closer look. No, there are subproblems underneath the regular problem.

Don’t you hate how frustrating it is to realize you have to do ten more problems underneath a regular problem? When you realize that you have to answer more questions than you thought you had to. This may seem like a small and insignificant issue compared to other concerns in the world right now, but that is why I am trying to bring attention to this dilemma. If we can’t solve smaller difficulties like this, how can we solve bigger ones plaguing our world?

We want the truth, we want to see how many questions we are actually solving. By seeing the actual amount of problems we are doing, we can account for how long the worksheet will take which can help us plan out our day. It is also really demotivating when you realize you have to answer a bunch of questions you did not realize were there. Demotivation also leads to distraction, which I am sure most have experienced before. By continuing to include subproblems on worksheets, teachers are decreasing students’ focus and motivation.

But there is an easy solution. Go email your teachers immediately and ask them to stop putting sub-problems on worksheets. Visit Change.org/stopsubproblems and sign the petition. Together we can all stop this issue from happening to us and other students.
