Change the start time for Waubonsie Valley High School to 8:30 am.
Dear Warriors,
I am a current Waubonsie senior who is very involved in my school community, both during the school day and in extracurriculars. I know that I am not alone when I say that getting up for school in the mornings is the worst part of my day. Getting up before sunrise causes me to have a really hard time waking up and getting ready for school. Therefore, I propose starting school at 8:30 am to allow all students an extra hour of sleep per night.
I know that one of the biggest concerns here is with the busses since middle schools start at 8. For this, I believe that we should switch schedules with the middle schoolers. They tend to be much more awake and go to sleep at an earlier time as they have less homework than we do on average. Since they already have an easier time getting up in the mornings, it makes sense for us to switch times with them.
High school students are already staying at school late for extracurricular activities and are working late into the nights on homework. The recommended amount of sleep for teens is 8.5 to 9 hours per night, and I know many people who average getting 4-5 hours of sleep a night. Getting an extra hour of sleep will help us be more successful in school with paying attention and retaining the information that we are learning. I am asking you to sign this petition and help encourage the administration to push back the start time of the school day.
