Recently, Northern Burlington Highschool has been very strict about bathroom use during the duration of the schoolyear. Northern talks about returning to normalcy, however students are encouraged not to socialize in the halls or visit eachother during lunch. So where are we pushed? to the bathrooms. Many students are dealing with mental health issues and bathrooms, even though not that sanitary, have become a safe place for all genders to socialize and feel comfortable under the roof of an extremely hectic school. The teachers or administrators say, why cant you go to the nurse? why cant you go to the counselor? we have ONE nurse in our entire school, with 4 beds. set up specifically for those who are sick. Counseling? you have to wait atleast two periods if you are in the middle of an anxiety attack, and please consider those who dont have the courage to speak up about their issues. We understand the importance of keeping northern a drug free place, however the majority of students aren't participating in those activities, and it isnt fair, many people also feel obligated to not use bathrooms because of illegal activities that occur inside of them, which doesnt just include smoking, but also recording videos that make others feel uncomfortable... so how do we create a balance for students who strictly want to use the bathroom and others who are being irresponsible when there are only two open? Please help us to get enough signatures to convince northern we are more than teenagers they can manipulate.
