Why this petition matters

Started by Arjun Joshi

We, the students of the London School of Economics and Political Science feel that the disqualification of Arjun Joshi has been based on a fundamentally undemocratic and non-transparent process conducted by the Democracy Committee of the LSE SU. As stakeholders in the election of the Post-graduate Student Officer of the Student Union, we demand the following.

1)   Minutes of the Democracy Committee be made public information so that the reasoning of the Returning Officer is made transparent and accessible.
2)   Revocation of a ad-hoc rule against Campaign Teams that was applied retrospectively to disqualify the candidate without no such rule existing prior to the elections were declared and nominations were invited.
3)   Disqualification is too harsh a punishment for a matter of breaking social distancing rules a few times in campus, therefore we demand that a reasonable punishment of vote reduction by 1/3rdof the votes polled in his name.

We appeal to the SU Democracy Committee to be an upholder of democratic norms and rational debate within the campus and accept our demands as it will be fundamentally undemocratic to undermine the mandate of a campaign that has appealed to a large section of students within the campus.
