In light of recent crime surrounding our college campuses and our nation as a whole, support for allowing concealed carry on campus has risen significantly. These campuses are home to thousands of intelligent individuals who should not have to be concerned with their safety while getting their post-secondary education.
Last April, the Tennessee state legislature voted in almost 3/4 majority to allow full time faculty and staff to conceal carry a firearm on college campuses across the state, allowing approximately 28,000 university employees to carry. We, the students, at the University of Tennessee at Martin, understand that this legislation did not go far enough. We believe, within certain means, that it is a constitutional right for students to carry on campus.
Requirements for potential students who can conceal carry on campus:
- 21+ years of age
- Completed the state written and range concealed carry test
- TBI Background check approval
- Carry required permit and able to present permit upon request
- Register permit with public safety
- Register firearm with public safety
In conclusion, the students, at the University of Tennessee at Martin, respectfully request that you commit to your constitutional right.
