Thomas Maybury started this petition to Student Finance UK

Due to the Coronavirus outbreak, the UK government advised all British citizens to return to the UK (https://www.gov.uk/government/news/foreign-secretary-advises-all-british-travellers-to-return-to-the-uk-now - March 23, 2020).

This call to return includes UK students mid-way through a year abroad, affecting their living situation and most likely reducing the amount of loan they are eligible to receive for the remainder of the 2019/20 academic year.

In response, Student Finance England and several universities have begun to advise students that any amount of extra maintenance loan given to students living abroad in this academic year will be deducted from their maintenance loan for the next academic year, despite having completed more than half of their year abroad.

As a result, this means that students still legally bound to pay living costs abroad will be financially disadvantaged. Additionally, it means that most students will be under an enormous amount of financial pressure throughout the next academic year, possibly losing out on over the equivalent of a month's rent.

UK students are calling for Student Finance UK to adhere to maintenance loan amounts already agreed for this academic year without deducting any extra payment from maintenance loans for the next academic year. By doing so, Student Finance UK would accept and relieve the burden of extra expenses of students returning to the UK from a year abroad.
