Creation of an eSports-focused Interest Group in TP

We are a group of passionate gamers who wish to build a thriving eSports-focused community in Temasek Polytechnic. eSports, defined as a form of competition using video games, is an industry which has undergone a massive boom in recent years, with sponsors ranging from established NBA teams such as the Golden State Warriors to conglomerates such as Samsung investing huge sums of money into developing the scene.

Examples of this substantial growth include, but are not limited to:

– Last year's Defence of the Ancients 2's The International 2017 tournament, with its unprecedented $24.7 million prize pool (That's on par with the prize pools of major golf tournaments, e.g. FedEx Cup, with it's $25 million prize pool)

– League of Legends had 57.6 million unique viewers watching the Finals of its Worlds 2017 tournament (That's more than the NBA Finals of the same year, which were watched by 31 million)

The paradigm is shifting, and it's become evident that video games are finally becoming legitimized as a sport. We want to be at the forefront of the movement to bring that competitive thrill and enriching experience directly to TP students (on a smaller scale, of course). For the very best of the best, eSports could very well become a potential career path for students from all walks of life in the future.

The optimal way to do so is by creating an official Student Interest Group where gamers of the same ilk can interact with one another, meeting new faces and making new friends.

Garena, the licensee of the League of Legends brand in Southeast Asia, has agreed to support us in our efforts here in Temasek Polytechnic, and we are currently in talks with the Singapore Cybersports & Online Gaming Association (SCOGA) to garner their support as well. We are hoping for these partnerships to bring value-added learning experiences to the table, including but not limited to events such as talks by industry experts, and tournaments to induct players into the competitive aspect of eSports.

To achieve our goal, we need your help to convince the school (well, specifically, its Student Development and Alumni Affairs Department) that this, the creation of an eSports-focused IG, is something that TP students support. We need to show them that gaming has evolved. We're no longer playing games solely for the sake of fun anymore; it's as competitive and grueling as any other sport, with focus, teamwork and individual skill being crucial elements to success. We are certain that many students of TP want to be part of that experience. The stakes are now truly higher than ever, and we need your help to bring that point across.

It's not just a game anymore. It's eSports – a sport that we want to make our own. Above all else, we're really committed to making this happen, so if you're at all interested in the grooming of eSports in Temasek Polytechnic, please consider signing this petition. Every signature counts towards helping us realize our dream of building an eSports community here in TP. It would be a big help, and an equally big step forward for all of us passionate gamers. Thank you!
