Why this petition matters

Started by Russell Leach

In 2021, the McKim Center and the McKim Community Association, Inc. celebrated the 200th anniversary of its "free school," the oldest, continuously active out-of-school-time educational program in the United States. We teach peace-building through athletics and academic enrichment to youth and families. The McKim Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with two dedicated spaces in the Jonestown neighborhood (zip code 21202) of East Baltimore City: the historic "Temple Building" at 1120 East Baltimore Street and the historic "Meeting House" at 1201 East Fayette Street. Together these spaces—and the coaches and teachers who have shaped them—have uplifted the lives of thousands of Baltimoreans within the housing communities around McKim and beyond. Since 1975, through athletic and academic enrichment, Coach Dwight Warren, the Executive Director Emeritus, steered the McKim Center to become a hub of "whole community" peace and wellness. Now led by Coach Garfield Thompson, the McKim Center continues its mission to build strong community in Baltimore and beyond for under-resourced youth and families with education, training, and health services through athletics and academics, and to uphold the McKim Center's pillars of structure, discipline, love, and respect.
