Street Light For Northeast Corner of East 60th St & Second Ave, New York, NY 10022

Street Light For Northeast Corner of East 60th St & Second Ave, New York, NY 10022
Why this petition matters

We the undersigned do hereby request the Commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation to use his knowledge and authority to review the immediate necessity for additional street lighting to be installed at the Northeast corner of East 60th Street and Second Ave in Manhattan, 10022. We also request the Commissioner review the following evidence in considering this matter:
The above cited location is currently poorly illuminated. In addition, this location is a bus stop for passengers waiting to board the Q 60 bus route, a highly trafficked and popular mode of transportation between Manhattan and Queens, NY. This location has a unique prevalence of individuals waiting on this particular corner for extended periods.
The location is also at the foot of the The Edward I.Koch Bridge. Due to the proximity to the bridge, there is steady and constant flow of vehicular and e-bicycle traffic on the block through all hours of the day and night. The prevalence of constant traffic necessitates additional lighting.
Evidence based studies including the notable “Can Street Lighting Reduce Crime ? “(urban labs uchicago.edu) have concluded that street lighting has a tangible effect in decreasing crime at a location. The lights study also found that the “ developments that received new street lights experienced crime rates that were significantly lower than would have been the case without the lights.” Among other findings, the study concluded that increased levels of lighting led to a 36% reduction in “ index crimes- a subset of serious felony crimes that includes murder, robbery, and aggravated assault, as well as certain property crimes- that took place outdoors at night in developments that received new lighting, with an overall 4% percent reduction in index crimes.
Placing additional lighting at this location lights provides a sense of security for citizens of the City and a deterrent to crime. We the undersigned, strongly urge the Commissioner to review this request and overturn the Department of Transportation decision that this current location is adequately illuminated.
