When this building was built in Stratford upon Avon in the 1930s, it was Guyver’s Garage – a car showroom with shiny new Triumph Motors on display behind the four big ground-floor windows. Upstairs, accessed by a ramp, was where the workshop was. The salesmen and mechanics would perhaps have blinked in disbelief had they been told that, 60 years on, their workplace would become a cinema. In the mid 90s, the last remaining example of Art Deco architecture in Stratford upon Avon became The Picture House.

Now, it’s under threat of demolition. Stratford on Avon District Council gave the go ahead for another cinema to be built in town, where you can enjoy the aroma of spicy ribs or chicken korma from the seat next to you where someone else is eating their supper. You can miss the sub title or facial expression at a crucial point, when a waitress flits across your line of vision, bringing someone a beer. The new cinema offers choice.

Here at the Picture House friendly staff give everyone a warm welcome and know many of the ‘regulars’ by name. The programme is brilliant – something for everyone from Peppa Pig to Star Wars, to Mr Turner to La Boheme. Prices are modest for a good afternoon or evening out. To lose all that is bad enough, but to lose this quirky building for the sake of yet another hotel – a 4 storey Travelodge – is unthinkable.
