On the 27th May 2021, our 7 year old son was hit by a car crossing Portia Street after school. He suffered some grazes and bruising to his face, as well as a broken arm, which will take him out of any sports for 6 weeks and has shaken his confidence walking to school and other places in the community.

This was a terrifying experience for him, as someone who already has quite high anxiety. The driver, the school, the police, the doctors, the nurses and our community were all amazing, but had there been a pedestrian crossing there, it never would have happened and could have been much worse if the driver had been going any faster. We know that there has already been another incident here and that the school has already made multiple submissions calling for a pedestrian crossing to be installed here.

It is a high traffic area, being at the back of the biggest local primary school, with a roll of over 400 pupils, many of whom walk here or are picked up here after school. The netball courts and hockey turf are also highly frequented, and with a new swimming complex also being built there, this traffic will only increase. The safety of our young people should be imperative in such a family friendly community, and we believe that if parents are confident their children will be safe, this might even encourage more children to walk to school, resulting in fewer cars fighting for parks in this area.
