On the morning of 14 January 2021, the decomposing bodies of Chantelle Ester Ash (20) and her 8 month old baby daughter, Tasneem Isha Ash were found dead, strangled to death.  Chantelle's hands were bound behind her back, allegedly with zip ties.  Beaten so savagely that, according to her mother, Chantelle was almost unrecognizable.

They (Chantelle and Tasneem) arrived at the lodge near Potgietersrus on the evening of 12 January 2021 at around 19h00 in the company of Mohammad Nasir aka Naseem Ahmed aka Neesham (the suspect), a Bangladeshi National, father of baby Tasneem and husband of Chantelle.  1 Nights accommodation was booked, check out time was 09h00, 13 January 2021.  The family was not seen on the 13th and it was assumed they left before check out time.  On 14 January the room was opened to have it cleaned, the bodies of Chantelle and baby Tasneem were discovered.

A countrywide manhunt was launched for the ''alleged'' perpetrator of the murders, Mohammad Nasir aka Naseem Ahmed, who was arrested in Brixton, Johannesburg on or around 21/22 January.  The ''suspect'' will appear in the Mokopane Court for a third time on 9 February 2021 for a formal bail hearing (bail hearing has been postponed twice already). He is a flight risk, appears to have a support network who are willing to fund, hide and help him evade prosecution. There is little doubt he WILL flee the country through our porous borders to a neighbouring country and return to Bangladesh.  Our border posts are unfortunately, sometimes manned by corrupt officials, ready to take money and ignore their sworn duty to uphold the law.  This is a fact, a reality. There will be no justice for Chantelle, Tasneem and their family if this man gets bail.

Much has been said by members of government and organisations about Gender Based Violence and the murder of women by their partners.  Talk is talk, it is time for the government send a clear message, it will not be tolerated - NO BAIL.  It is time for the NPA to be brave, fearless and consistent in how the perpetrators of these crimes are bought to justice.
