Stow-Munroe Falls Board of Education: Stop Bus Privatization at Stow-Munroe Falls City Schools!

Bus privatization is a failed experiment in Ohio. Nonetheless, the Superintendent of Stow-Munroe has recently proposed privatizing the district’s transportation:

“Superintendent Dr. Russ Jones confirmed the district is considering outsourcing the transportation of students beginning with the 2013-14 school year. Jones told the Stow Sentry the district is awaiting proposals from two companies – First Student and Petermann.”
Stow Sentry, 6/23/13

Ohioans are rejecting private busing for their children because of safety concerns, high costs and poor service. Both First Student and Petermann have tarnished records. Groveport-Madison Schools dumped Petermann buses in 2009 after a lawsuit for breach of contract, and Columbus City Schools is dumping First Student this year after safety concerns and parent complaints!

There are numerous documented examples:

“In January 2007, school bus driver Lawrence Battle was pulled over for making an illegal turn. The Columbus police officer who conducted the traffic stop saw a hypodermic needle next to the driver’s seat. That incident revealed First Student had not done complete background checks on all of its drivers that year.”
10tv.com, 4/24/13

“…a [First Student] driver recently took a young student into a McDonalds Restaurant on Cleveland Avenue and told him to stand outside the restroom while the driver used it, asking the child to not tell anyone.”
Columbus Dispatch, 4/24/13

“Complaints about the [First Student] bus service have been numerous during the past three years – and they continued at the board meeting last night.”
Columbus Dispatch 4/24/13

“There were also two bus crashes in the school parking lot and ‘countless hours’ waiting on hold on the phone with First Student to discuss late busses or missing children….”
Columbus Dispatch 4/24/13

“…in the Groveport Madison Board of Education’s lawsuit against its transportation provider Petermann, LLC... the district alleged Petermann used the bus facility to operate a private charter business (The board expressed concern about allegations that buses labeled “Groveport Madison Local Schools” were seen at out of state casinos.) …Petermann acknowledged it did ‘mistakenly use’ and ‘fail to replace’ some diesel fuel…”
Columbus Messenger 7/8/09

“’The cost per day of a Petermann buses is higher than what it costs per day for board owned buses,’ Said [School District Attorney Michael] Fusco, ‘It’s a huge difference.’”
Columbus Messenger 7/8/09

“The District said it can save $10.6 Million over three years by taking the [First Student] operation in house with union drivers”
Columbus Dispatch 4/24/13

This is not what we want for the Stow-Munroe Falls community. Our children's safety is not for sale!
