In applying for a Postgraduate Masters degree in Theology, I came to understand that financial aid is not given to Northern Irish students wanting to pursue further study in this area, had I been from England, Scotland or Wales the story would be different and I would be supported.

I am unsure if this is the same situation for any other postgraduate degree pathways, however I think it is ridiculous that because of my geographical situation, my government does not support the furthering of my education, limiting my ability to progress in my career pathway.

If we wish to study Theology, our only options at home are Belfast Bible College, and Union Theological College. Both of these institutions are not covered fully by StudentFinanceNI, however, if one then decides to study theology in another part of UK, this is also not fully funded by StudentFinanceNI. This is absolutely unacceptable, as students are still left in the turmoil of theological problems in NI.

We demand the same treatment as every other prospective theological student in the UK - and this means receiving the same financial support. We deserve education, and the means to attain degrees without the monetary pressure.

We need to stand up for the right to education despite our financial or geographical situation or our specific subject pathway. Just because we are from Northern Ireland and wanting to pursue further study in our own country should not limit how high we should be able to reach based on our financial earnings. ESPECIALLY if that study will feed back into the community by benefitting an area of research or work.

Our government should support our further education, wether we are from Northern Ireland, or anywhere else in the UK. This should not be a factor preventing us from pursuing our career.
