Thanksgiving Day is the one day of the year when families, friends and communities take a moment to gather and celebrate the many blessings for which they can be thankful, a day when we all stop and feel gratitude for what we have, rather than think another day about what we don't have.
Retailers have their day. It's called "Black Friday" and for years the doors have been opening earlier and earlier at the big retailers to kick off the Christmas Holiday season. Now big retailers like TARGET, WAL-MART, SEARS, KMART, GAP, BANANA REPUBLIC, OLD NAVY, and TOYS R US have decided to increase their bottom line by taking the Thanksgiving holiday away from their employees, as well as the children and families of those employees, by pushing "Black Friday" hours into the Thanksgiving holiday. And they want to fundamentally change Thanksgiving by encouraging families to curtail their time together, to wrap up festivities early, to get in line to buy products that otherwise would be available the next day, on Black Friday.
Enough is enough.
We pledge to avoid those stores that want to take away Thanksgiving.
Please keep Thanksgiving Day a holiday for gathering, for celebration of family, community and for giving thanks for the real gifts in life that can't be bought.
In return, we will gladly give you our business the rest of the year.
