STOP VIOLENCE AND HATE CRIMES AGAINST THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY
STOP VIOLENCE AND HATE CRIMES AGAINST THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY
The issue I would like to address is violence (assault,
domestic violence and more) against the LGBTQ people in the United States. The
first modern hate crime law was passed in 1968 and made it a crime to use
violence against somebody for race, color, religion, or ethnicity. In 2009 the
Shepard/Byrd Hate Crime law passed making it a crime to use violence against
someone because of gender, disability, gender identity or sexual orientation. This
is important, but many states have different laws, or no hate crime law at all,
making it hard to enforce. As a result stronger federal laws are needed.
What level of government has authority over your issue? Is it a national or local
issue? Since this problem affects people all over the country, I would say we need
to work at the federal level in Congress to get news laws passed. In addition,
states have very different laws on this subject. After the new law, covering all 50
states, it will be up to the judicial branch to evaluate the laws. There already is
the Shepard/Byrd Hate Crime law the Criminal Justice Act but it doesnt cover all
types of assault. Another law showing opposition to my topic is the anti-labta law,
also known as the '
"don't say gay law" in Florida, supported by the governor there.
Please support this cause if we get to 1,000 i will send this to my state senator. 10,000 I will send to the supreme court
I have not experienced any of these crimes but it’s an important cause
