Unfortunately, our world is becoming a place where we cannot be so trusting to allow anyone into our schools without a layer of security to help keep our students safe. I am saddened and furious that the Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District is leaving our students so vulnerable on Election Day for anybody in the community to enter their school/safe place to vote. There are many negatives to allowing this to happen. There has been a slow trend away from using schools to vote while children are in class due to safety concerns. As an Itinerant staff, I travel around the district and have heard from many front office staff how uncomfortable they feel allowing so many adults into their school while students are there to learn. I feel it is so important for our students to be safe and feel safe while in our schools. We need to use precautions and put our students’ safety first. I am hopeful we can help our district with this huge security issue moving forward. I hope this finds you all well and I look forward to this positive change for our students, teachers, and district as a whole.
