A White Buffalo is sacred to many indigenous nations and others who believe in their ways. Killing and hunting one, especially for sport, is a horrific thought. It also takes many back to the senseless slaughter during the time of western expansion of buffalo for their tongues that almost exterminated the buffalo.
According to Wikipedia, white buffalo are extremely rare with the National Bison Association estimating that they only occur in approximately one out of every 10 million births.
The Texas Hunt Lodge is advertising on their website the ‘opportunity to hunt and harvest the Authentic and Rare White Buffalo’ for the Trophy Fee of $13,500. The advertisement can be seen here - http://www.texashuntlodge.com/white_buffalo_hunt_package.asp.
Native Americans see the white buffalo not as a huge trophy, but as a hugely significant part of Native culture. The esteemed Lakota spiritual leader John Lame Deer called the white buffalo “the most sacred living thing you could ever encounter.” Oglala Sioux spiritual leader Floyd Looks for Buffalo Hand, a grandson of Red Cloud, is quoted as saying “The arrival of the white buffalo is like the second coming of Christ. … It will bring about purity of mind, body, and spirit and unify all nations—black, red, yellow, and white.”
Understandably this trophy hunt being offered by the Texas Hunt Lodge has alarmed many Native Americans and others. Please add your voice to ours in telling the Texas Hunt Lodge that you do not condone the senseless slaughter of the sacred White Buffalo.
