Malcolm Turnbull has declared war on workers, with his support for cuts to penalty rates, cuts to university funding and new laws targeting construction workers. The cut to penalty rates is a threat to workers everywhere. Retail and hospitality is just the beginning. Labor and The Greens are both promising to overturn the cuts in parliament if Turnbull loses the next election. But that is two years away.

The CFMEU construction union has held regular nationwide stopwork rallies against the Australian Building and Construction Commission (ABCC) and the new Building Code. Thousands took to the streets in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane in both March and June. But the CFMEU cannot be left to fight alone.

At the same time, the budget brought down $2.8 billion in cuts to university, just as the NTEU tertiary union is entering industrial bargaining. And in NSW, the state government is trying to privatise the inner-west bus services.

A serious union-wide campaign could halt these attacks and finish Turnbull off. As new ACTU leader Sally McManus said, bad laws are made to be broken. It is time to use our industrial muscle to defeat these attacks.

Unions NSW has called a combined delegates’ meeting for July 28th. This meeting needs to launch an ongoing campaign of demonstrations and stop-work rallies starting in August 2017.

We the undersigned call on our unions and Unions NSW, in conjunction with the ACTU, to:

·       Organise a major weekday demonstration in August 2017 to demand the repeal of the ABCC and Building Code, stop budget cuts to universities and demand legislation to protect penalty-rates
