Stop the University of Kent from replacing proper teaching with AI based learning
The Issue
The University of Kent, while student fees are increasing, have been threatening redundancies and removal of certain subjects. In addition, in the School of Computing, proper learning of programming and other principles is being forgone in favour of encouraging the use of AI large language models (LLMs). This means students are not understanding what they are learning, and are instead relying on AI to do the thinking for them. The evidence of Artificial Intelligence being beneficial to actual education does not hold - it is simply a way to employ less people for less pay in the workplace, and there are several studies such as Gerlich, 2025 (https://www.mdpi.com/2075-4698/15/1/6 that provide evidence to the contrary, that AI negatively impacts critical thinking skills.
We argue that the University of Kent, like many others, is complicit in the 'businessification' of higher education especially in such fields. This means favouring the ideas of business and industry rather than the interests of genuine education and improval of skill. If this is allowed to continue, more and more students will be thrust into debt, funnelling money to the business class who wish to pay less, and employ fewer. Empirically, quality of education directly correlates to quality of services, but this is being and has been abandoned for profit-driven purposes.
If swift and decisive action is not taken soon to curtail these conflicts of interest from our educational institutions, the workforce of tomorrow will be less equipped to handle the critical situations and problems that arise in such trying times. Not only will the quality of life for students decrease, but the quality of services provided by those taught under AI 'education' will be lower, impacting much greater swaths of our wider society.
It is high time that we take this seriously, for the furthering of education in our society and the narrowing of income inequality.
