Sexual orientation emerges without any prior sexual experience. Although individuals can choose whether to act on their feelings, psychologists and psychiatrists do not consider sexual orientation to be a conscious choice that can be voluntarily changed.
Sometimes pressured by the influence of family members or religious groups, LGBT individuals are strongly encouraged, if not coerced, to try and change their sexual orientation through counseling or religion. Attempting to change a person’s sexual orientation is like attempting to change one's eye color. The reality is that sexual orientation is not a choice or an illness. It does not require treatment and it is not changeable.
In 1973 the American Psychiatric Association confirmed the importance of new better designed research and removed homosexuality from the official manual that lists mental and emotional disorders (DSM). Two years later, the American Psychological Association passed a resolution supporting the removal.
For more than 25 years, both associations have urged all mental health professionals to help dispel the stigma of mental illness that some people still associate with homosexual orientation.
Counseling and "Rehabilitation" programs to change a person's sexual orientation are nothing more than TORTURE camps for LGBT individuals.
These programs cause severe pain and anguish for LGBT individuals.
Young kids are often victimized at the hands of their own parents, and many choose suicide as their only means of escape.
Urge your elected officials to shut down these institutions of torture cloaked in religious ideology, and help prevent unnecessary teen suicides. Remind them that, above all, if they are not part of the solution, then they are part of the problem, and they too will have blood on their hands.
