Why this petition matters

Started by Zimena Didovich

We urge the University of Auckland to immediately reinstate vaccine requirements on campus, continue to be strict about masking in all indoor areas on campus, provide free or affordable N95 masks on campus, ensure that all enclosed spaces on campus are properly ventilated (the engineering department could make Corsi-Rosenthaal boxes as an interim measure), and maintain social distancing and hand sanitising requirements.

The University of Auckland has decided to remove vaccine requirements on campus, and some rooms at the University are not well ventilated. As the unvaccinated are known to spread COVID-19 at a significantly greater rate than the vaccinated, the high risk, vulnerable, disabled, and those with family and friends in these groups are facing a deadly virus with much less protection should we return to campus.

To prevent the spread of COVID-19, epidemiologists, front line public health workers, and other public health experts have consistently been saying for close to two years that the best preventive measures against the spread of COVID-19 are:

- Vaccination

- N95/KN95/FPP3 masks (or double mask with 2 blue surgicals or a cloth mask over a blue surgical mask)

- Proper ventilation, ideally with a HEPA filter

- Social distancing

- Hand sanitising/washing

As students who are paying thousands of dollars per paper to receive a good quality education, it is reasonable to expect the University of Auckland to maintain these basic  measures to allow us to come back to campus as safely as possible to access said education. Nobody should be excluded from the University community for being high risk, disabled, vulnerable, or having family in these groups.
